James 5

Misuse of Riches

1 aCome now, byou rich people, cweep and howl for your miseries which are coming upon you. 2 dYour riches have rotted and your garments have become moth-eaten. 3Your gold and your silver have corroded, and their corrosion will
Lit be for
serve as a testimony against you and will consume your flesh like fire. It is fin the last days that you have stored up your treasure!
4Behold, gthe pay of the laborers who mowed your fields, and which has been withheld by you, cries out against you; and hthe outcry of those who did the harvesting has reached the ears of ithe Lord
Gr sabaoth, for Heb tsebaoth
of armies.
5You have
Or led a life of self-indulgence
,
llived for pleasure on the earth and lived luxuriously; you have
Lit nourished
fattened your hearts in na day of slaughter.
6You have condemned and
Or murdered
,
pput to death qthe righteous person; he offers you no resistance.

Exhortation

7 Therefore be patient, rbrothers and sisters, suntil the coming of the Lord. tThe farmer waits for the precious produce of the soil, being patient about it, until
Or he
it gets vthe early and late rains.
8 wYou too be patient; xstrengthen your hearts, for ythe coming of the Lord is znear. 9 aaDo not
Lit groan
complain, acbrothers and sisters, against one another, so that you may not be judged; behold, adthe Judge is standing
Lit before
,
afright at the
Lit doors
door.
10As an example, ahbrothers and sisters, of suffering and patience, take aithe prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. 11We count those ajblessed who endured. You have heard of akthe
Or steadfastness
endurance of Job and have seen amthe
Lit end of the Lord
outcome of the Lord’s dealings, that aothe Lord is full of compassion and is merciful.

12 But above all, apmy brothers and sisters, aqdo not swear, either by heaven or by earth or with any other oath; but
Lit yours is to be yes, yes, and no, no
your yes is to be yes, and your no, no, so that you do not fall under judgment.

13 Is anyone among you assuffering? atThen he must pray. Is anyone cheerful? He is to ausing praises. 14Is anyone among you sick? Then he must call for avthe elders of the church and they are to pray over him,
Lit having anointed
,
axanointing him with oil in the name of the Lord;
15and the ayprayer of faith will
Lit save
,
barestore the one who is sick, and the Lord will bbraise him up, and if he has committed sins,
Lit it
they will be forgiven him.
16Therefore, bdconfess your sins to one another, and pray for one another so that you may be behealed. bfA
Or supplication
prayer of a righteous person, when it is
I.e., granted by God
brought about, can accomplish much.
17Elijah was bia man with a nature like ours, and bjhe prayed
Lit with prayer
earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the earth for blthree years and six months.
18Then he bmprayed again, and bnthe sky
Lit gave
poured rain and the earth produced its fruit.

19 My brothers and sisters, bpif anyone among you strays from bqthe truth and someone turns him back, 20let him know that the one who has turned a sinner from the error of his way will brsave his soul from death and bscover a multitude of sins.
